These images reflect change and Freud’s outlook on familiarity in The Uncanny along with Jung’s principle of opposites. With lockdown restrictions and the coronavirus pandemic, our outlook on what is familiar and unfamiliar had been altered. Using simplistic methods and experimentation Emily concluded that creating images of familiar objects and distorting them using scanography would depict this. Trees and plants were one of only a few things that remained the same throughout the coronavirus crisis. Our lockdown restrictions allowed daily walks and therefore many were seeing more of nature than usual. Black and white images create the unease of something unfamiliar and horrifying. This contrasts our previous thoughts on trees and plants acting as a haven and an escape from the reality of the situation.
